Strategic management process

Understand first. Memorise only after the concept makes sense.

Strategic management is the continuing process by which an organisation decides where it wants to go, studies its situation, chooses a strategy, puts that strategy into action, and checks whether it is working. Think of it as a loop: direction → analysis → choice → implementation → evaluation/control.

A small hospital wants to become the preferred cardiac centre in its city. It sets a goal, studies patients/competitors/regulation, checks its doctors and equipment, chooses a differentiation strategy, invests in cardiac services and marketing, then tracks patient outcomes and market response.

Common sequence: strategic intent/direction; environmental analysis; strategy formulation/choice; implementation; evaluation and control. Formulation asks “what should we do?” Implementation asks “how do we make it happen?” Control compares actual results with desired results.

Memory hook
Imagine driving with GPS: destination = vision; route scan = analysis; route chosen = strategy; driving = implementation; rerouting after traffic = evaluation/control.

Common traps

NET trap: formulation and implementation are not the same. SWOT is an analysis tool, not the entire strategic-management process. Mission is present purpose; vision is desired future direction. Strategy evaluation is not only the final step because feedback can restart analysis.

Compare carefully: Vision vs Mission; Formulation vs Implementation; Strategic control vs Operational control

Explain it without looking back

In your own words: what is the core idea, and what is one simple example?

How well could you explain it?

Examples: “Explain this like I am a beginner”, “Hindi me aur simple example do”, “Vision and mission ka difference samjhao”.
