Teaching: concept, objectives and levels

Understand first. Memorise only after the concept makes sense.

Teaching is a purposeful process that facilitates learning. In UGC NET, remember three classic levels: Memory level (recall), Understanding level (meaning/relationships), and Reflective level (critical thinking and problem solving). The teacher’s role and learner activity generally become more learner-centred as we move upward.

If a teacher asks students to list Maslow’s needs, that is mainly memory. If students explain why the hierarchy matters, that is understanding. If they critique whether the hierarchy fits gig workers in India and defend an alternative, that is reflective.

Memory: recall and recognition. Understanding: relationships, meaning, generalisation. Reflective: problem-centred, critical inquiry, highest learner involvement. Objectives should align teaching method and evaluation.

Memory hook
Think: Remember → Explain → Challenge/Solve. R-E-C: Recall, Explain, Critique.

Common traps

NET trap: “highest level” generally points to Reflective, not Understanding. Memory level is not useless—it is foundational—but it gives the least scope for independent thinking.

Compare carefully: Memory vs Understanding vs Reflective; Formative vs Summative evaluation

Explain it without looking back

In your own words: what is the core idea, and what is one simple example?

How well could you explain it?

Ask for another explanation

Examples: “Explain this like I am a beginner”, “Hindi me aur simple example do”, “Vision and mission ka difference samjhao”.
